High Blood Pressure Treatments
High blood pressure or hypertension is referred to as a “silent killer” because very often people do not realize they are suffering from this disease till it is too late. Even when they experience some symptoms, they tend to ignore them and do not investigate further into it, culminating in disaster.
The disease is so called since the blood vessels experience increased pressure due to narrowing of arteries and this condition is normally treated with drugs that prevent this narrowing. These medicines referred to as “ace inhibitors” prevent the angiotensin formation that is the direct cause of blood vessels narrowing and allow the vessels to retain the natural form.
Another method is to decrease the strength of the heart beats by blocking the nerve impulses from accessing the heart through administration of beta blockers. Alpha blockers act on the nerve impulses and prevent them from reaching the blood vessels. The third one is a combination of the two, and acts on the heart as well as on the blood vessels, is called “alpha-beta-blocker”, resulting in lowering the blood pressure. This is achieved by calming the blood vessels and reducing the quantity of blood being pumped.
The blood vessels also thicken due to deposits of calcium which makes the passage of blood flow difficult. This is treated with administration of calcium blockers which inhibit the entry of calcium and by this action prevents the arteries from getting thick. This leads to improved blood flow through the vessels reducing the blood pressure.
One more medication is to use vasodilators which functions by expanding the blood vessels to permit the blood to circulate smoothly.
One reason for hypertension is the retention of fluids in the body. This is flushed out through the use of diuretics. These drugs flush out excess water and sodium resulting in the pressure easing on the blood vessels. Usually they are used only for patients having kidney related problems or during pregnancy. The hypertension resulting out of such accumulation of fluids is referred to as “secondary”, since the cause is not due to the aforesaid factors. The consulting doctor will recommend drugs based on your overall condition and depending upon other factors. It is imperative that you are also aware of these drugs and keep yourself updated on the possible after effects. Being well informed before hand prepares you better for any eventuality.
Hypertension is a disease that can be conquered with the right medication at the right time. Besides medication, changes in the food habits like reducing salt intake and following a good exercise regimen goes a long way towards controlling this malaise.
